Baba Amte laid to rest with state honours
Chandrapur, Maharashtra, Feb 10 (UNI) Noted social reformer and Magsaysay Award winner Baba Amte was laid to rest with full state honours at his 'Anandwan' Ashram here today.
Pall-bearers lowered Baba's mortal remains into a grave near a bamboo plantation on the Ashram premises as thousands of admirers and mourners, including several prominent personalities, chanted verses from the 'Bharat Jodo' (Knit India) theme song. Baba, who died at Anandwan early yesterday at age 94, was buried and not cremated as per his last wishes.
Earlier, a squad of policemen reversed arms as a mark of respect before giving a 21-gun salute to the departed soul.
