TN Cabinet okays 5 mega projects

Chennai, Feb 8 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Cabinet today accorded sanction to five mega projects, including Renault Nissan automobile unit, involving a total investment of Rs 16,000 crore.

Chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the Cabinet, for the first time, gave its nod for projects, involving a total investment of Rs 16,000 crore at one go, an official release here said.

Renault Nissan automobile unit with a capacity to manufacture four lakh vehicles, Ashok Leyland's expansion project to manufacture three lakh vehicles, Flash cards, Media Players and Memory cards manufacturing unit at SIPCOT Special Economic Zone and chips at Oragadam were among the major projects, sanctioned by the Cabinet.

The Cabinet also cleared a project to build Information Technology park at Taramani in four million sq ft area and build an international conference hall. The project would be executed by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation along with Tata Reality and Infrastructure.

The five projects, when implemented, would provide direct employment to 58,500 people and indirect employment to 47,500 people, the release said.
