40 buried alive in snow avalanche in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 8: At least 40 people, including women and children, were feared buried alive in a snow avalanche in Gujjar Pati of south Kashmir this morning.

The Army has launched a massive rescue operation. Three bodies have been recovered so far. According to official sources, a report was received that about 40 people, including women and children, in ten houses were buried alive in village Gulab Bagh, Gujjat Pati area on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway near Lower Monda. A defence ministry spokesman told to to the sources that two companies of the Army have been rushed to the area to carry out rescue operations.

''It was snowing heavily in the area and we are heading for the village,'' he said.
