Villagers stage demonstration over death of undertrial

Rourkela, Feb 06 (UNI) Irate villagers, led by former MLA George Tirkey, today staged a demonstration in front of Raiboga Police station for more than four hours following the death of an undertrial in the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) here yesterday.

One Kartik Kumbhar (40) of Gopapur village was remanded to custody on the charge of selling country liquor around 15 days back.

He was lodged in the Rourkela Special jail, where he fell sick and was shifted to the IGH two days back.

The undertrial died of hepatitis and his body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem.

But this morning villagers, led by Mr Tirkey, sat on a dharna in front of the Raiboga police station with the body, alleging negligence both by jail and excise officials and demanded action against the guilty.

However, the villagers left after Panposh SDPO Gopal Tripathy and other senior officials intervened in the matter.
