CPM hartal in Aluva following attack on MLA
Kochi, Feb 6 (UNI) The CPM has called for a 'hartal' in the Aluva constitutency near here today following an alleged attack on its MLA A M Yousef last night.
The MLA, who was allegedly attacked by some Congress workers at Kadungalloor in Aluva, is admitted in the Government Hospital Aluva with minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested four Congress workers in connection with the incident. They were identified as Abdul Salam, Nizar, Saithukunju and Shanavaz.
The Congress, however, has alleged that the incident was ''cooked up'' and accused the police of arresting its workers on false charges. The party will take out a march to the Aluva police station later today to demand the release of the workers.
The situation, which was tense last night following the incident, was under control today, police said.
The CPM-called 'hartal' will be observed from 1400 to 1800 hrs.
The MLA was allegedly manhandled as he was returning after addressing a campaign meeting for a by-election in the 6th ward of Kadungalloor panchayat, scheduled for tomorrow.
CPM sources said the MLA, his driver Rajesh Kumar and CPM area committee member T K Shahjahan were attacked by some Congress activists who came on a motorcylce and waylaid Mr Yousef's car.
