In UK, foreign criminals awaiting deportation have plasma TVs, Nintendo games
London, Feb.4 : In a development that could send shivers down the spines of most Britons, a new report has revealed that at least three criminals are freed from jail every hour to ease overcrowding in the country's prisons. A row has also broken out over dangerous foreign criminals, including killers and rapists, reportedly enjoying a host of lavish perks while they await deportation.
According to The Sun, their taxpayer-funded comforts include giant plasma television sets, nintendo Wii game consoles; a music room with expensive gear and cash rewards for playing football.
The tabloid also reveals that detainees can even buy goods at a store inside the centre - and have them hand-delivered to their cells by prison staff.
Mark Wallace, of the Taxpayers' Alliance, said: "It's a disgrace. Taxpayers are funding a lavish lifestyle for people who should not even be in this country."
Shadow Immigration Minister Damian Green said: "Detention centres should be civilised and humane, but not luxurious."
One senior official told The Sun: "There are plasma TVs in some cells - and 48in ones in the communal areas.
Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said last night: "We are always under pressure from HM Government inspectors to provide improved constructive activities."
