PMK Leader's plea to Montek on Rly link

Puducherry, Feb 4 (UNI) PMK Parliamentary Party Leader M Ramadass urged Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia to positively consider and grant an in-principle approval for a broad guage line between Chennai and Cuddalore via Puducherry.

In a letter to Dr Ahluwalia, a copy of which was released to the press here today, Prof Ramadass said the project had huge significance and hence, deserved the approval.

Puducherry, the capital city of the union territory which was 160 km away from Chennai, was becoming a hub of education and tourism.

The industrialisation of the territory depended on import of raw materials from neighbouring states. However, all developments were hampered due to lack of transport infrastructure in the form of air and rail connectivity.

At present, Puducherry is connected to Chennai by a circuitous railway route. The proposal mooted would reduce the distance by 30 km and take only three hours of travel to reach here from the present five hours.
