Fishing operations begin

Rameswaram, Feb 2 (UNI) After a week-long stir, fishing operations began in the island as the fisher folk set sail into the sea today.

Official sources told UNI here that all the 850-odd mechanized fishing boats, which were anchored in the Rameswaram coast due to the indefinite strike by the fishermen for various demands, ventured into the sea for fishing.

The Rameswaram coast wore a festive look with the revival of fishing operations. The strike had affected atleast 10,000 families resulted a revenue loss of Rs ten crore for the fishing industry, the sources said.

More than 3,000 fishermen had kept off the sea since January 5 last, demanding the immediate release of 12 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy and removal of sea mines planted by the Lankan Navy between Neduntheevu and Katchatheevu islands.
