Ammunition seized at Mizoram border
Aizawl, Feb 2 (UNI) The Champhai police and local Young Mizo Association (YMA) volunteers seized a huge cache of ammunition near the Indo-Myanmar border.
Champhai officer-in-charge K Vanlalringa told UNI today, ''Actually, the YMA volunteers were on the lookout for illicit liquor about which they had been tipped-off. However, they instead came across the cache of ammunition being smuggled from Myanmar yesterday.'' The vigilants immediately informed the police, who rushed to the spot and conducted the seizure, he added.
The seized ammunition included 1,075 rounds of AK 47, 14 magazines of G-3, two magazines and nine rounds of US carbine, three large and 43 small rocket mortars, he said.
While two of the alleged smugglers managed to flee, the other one, from Myanmar's Zokhawthar (border village), was arrested.
Police suspeced that the ammunition was meant to be smuggled away somewhere else via Mizoram.
