Two students die as school gives way

Berhampur, Feb 01 (UNI) At least two school students were killed when a concrete beam of the main gate of Tala Raisingh UP School, 100 km from here, fell on them yesterday.

Police today said the incident occurred while Kailash Chandra Nayak (14) and Mukesh Nayak (8) were playing along with eight other students near the school gate.

Mohana Police Station ASI Niranjan Patra has registered a case and sent the bodies for post mortem to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here this morning.

Gajapati Collector D V Swamy has sanctioned Rs 10,000 while Mohana BDO Prasant Kumar Rath has given Rs 1000 each to both the bereaved families.

The Village Education Committee (VEC) was entrusted with the construction of the 15 ft wide iron gate, the Mohana BDO said adding that investigation is on to ascertain the reason as why the concrete beam broke..

The gate was built two years ago and the concrete beam was built recently with the funds provided by the Sarva Sikhya Abhiyan.

The irate locals have demanded a thorough enquiry into the incident.
