Rare Buddha statue stolen from temple
Bargarh, Feb 1(UNI) A rare Buddha statue dating back to 17th century was stolen from a temple in Ganiapali village from the district on Wednesday last.
Police today said, the miscreants, broke open the gate of the temple and escaped with the statue. They have also taken away the head of another Buddha statue from the temple.
Villagers said they saw a helicopter flying a few metres above the ground on Wednesday night.
People suspect the role of international smugglers behind the theft of the precious idol.
Expressing concern over the theft, ruling BJD MLA Anand Acharay said he would bring the matter to the notice of the chief minister.
He demanded adequate security to all other districts where other valuable statues were lying in unsafe condition in temples and historical places.
