Mizoram: Illegal settlers responsible for HIV
Aizawl, Feb 01: Aizawl-based Federation of NGOs Working in Drugs and AIDS Prevention and Care (FONWIDAPAC) has revealed that illegal settlers in Mizoram were mainly responsible for the spread of HIV/AIDS.
In a recent study by the federation, about 80 per cent of such people were without proper permits out of which 60 per cent of them were found HIV positive.
''It is quite clear that these illegal settlers have contributed towards the spread of HIV/AIDS in Mizoram,'' the federation members told UNI here today and stressed on the need to conduct extensive awareness among the community.
It also urged the concerned authorities to take necessary steps in this regard.
In a state level consultation held here yesterday, FONWIDAPAC has determined to take more efforts in combating the menace along with drugs and sexual abuse.
The meeting also agreed upon a common referral form for all rehab centres to other centres for better coordination among the NGOs.
Delegates from different districts, who participated in the meeting, also pointed out shortage of medical experts and emphasised on the need to impart different kinds of training so as to strengthen their services.
