East Godavari Collectorate building completes centenary

Kakinada Feb 1 (UNI) The age old East Godavari Collectorate building, an architectural marvel, needs to be preserved for future generations, District Collector M Subrahmanyam said today.

Inaugurating the three-day centenary celebrations of the imposing edifice here, he said the district was poised for a great leap towards industrialisation, with SEZS, and gas based and port based industries coming up on the other, with the offshore exploration for hydrocarbons in the Krishna-Godavari basin giving it a necessary fillip.

First additional district sessions judge Naga Maruti Sarma, who was the guest of honour, said the district courts buildings were also constructed during Dutch period and requested the Collector to help in giving a face-lift to these buildings without spoiling their architectural beauty.

Joint Collector Vijayakumar said the Collectorate building, resembling a castle, took nearly four years for its construction between 1903-1907. The foundation stone was laid by Mr Amphtil and the first Collector was J A Cunnings.
