35 criminal cases pending against Atiq

Lucknow, Feb 1 (UNI) Almost 35 criminal cases were pending against absconding MP Atiq Ahmad, who was nailed down by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police in Pitampura area of the national capital yesterday evening.

Besides, the 2005 assassination of BSP MLA Raju Pal, almost 175 cases had been registered against the expelled SP MP at Allahabad and other places, special secretary (home) Sarvesh Kumar Mishra told reporters here this evening.

Later, some cases were withdrawn. However, 35 heinous cases of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and issuing life threats to witnesses were still pending against him, he said.

Mr Mishra said the first FIR was lodged against Atiq in 1979. He is a history-sheeter and kingpin of gang no 227, which comprises 134 members.

The UP Police has obtained transit remand from the Delhi Police for producing the MP before a magistrate in Allahabad.

Atiq was on the run after his name cropped up in the sensational killing of Raju Pal, a BSP MLA in UP. He was carrying a bounty of Rs 20,000 on his head.
