A top-ranking Gujarat police official said Central intelligence sources informed them that Mr Modi had received an assassination threat on his personal e-mail address, which was confirmed by the highly-placed sources in the state government. Following the threat, the security around the Chief Minister had been tightened, the official said.
Mr Modi was getting Z-plus security since the last few years. However, after the threat, the second security circle around him had also been strengthened, he added.
The Central intelligence agencies received inputs that a senior Pakistan Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) official contacted fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and told him to target Mr Modi and senior BJP leader L K Advani.
