Highways in TN to be upgraded: Minister

Chennai, Jan 31 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Highways and Ports Minister Vellakoil M P Saminathan today informed the State Assembly that highways to a stretch of 3,213 km in the state would be upgraded to four-lane roads.

Replying to a question from AIADMK MLA Gunasekaran during question hour, the Minister said that of the total 4,480 km highways in the state, 3,213 km would be developed into four-lane roads by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

''According to the requirement, some of the stretches would also be made six lanes,'' he said Initially, the government would take steps to convert the existing two-lane national highways from Madurai to Rameswaram via Manamadurai, Paramakkudi and Ramanathapuram to four-lane highways.

''A detailed project report is being prepared by the NHAI in this regard. Work is expected to start very soon,'' he added.
