Mithi urged to instruct Local Adm Dept against unproductive work

Puducherry, Jan 30 (UNI) President of the Puducherry Panchayat MOveMent Mr V A Vasudevaraju today urged Lt.Governor Mukut Mithi to instruct the Local Administration Department not to indulge in "unproductive and unwanted " work of calling for explanations from Village Panchayat Presidents for not conducting a "grama sabha" meeting.

In a letter to Mr Mithi, Mr Raju said instead, action should be taken immediatley to delegate functions, finance and functionaries to village and commune panahcyats, and municipalities.

Stating that the failure of the government to devolve powers to the elected local body representatives was the reason for the present situation, Mr Raju said once powers were devolved, one can see the holding of 'grama sabha' meetings in all panchayats on August 15 or even earlier.
