SC notice to Centre for exempting modified food from check
New Delhi, Jan 27 (UNI) The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Centre on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the government notification dated August 23, 2007, exempting genetically modified food substances from mandatory approval of Genetically Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC).
A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran issued notice on January 25 after hearing the counsel for the petitioner who contended that genetically modified food substances were extremely harmful for health and the people were exposed to health hazards as the only check on these food articles had been removed.
The notification was published on September 11, last year.
