R-day celebrated in Kashmir amid unprecedented security

Srinagar, Jan 26: The 59th Republic Day was today celebrated throughout the Kashmir valley amid unprecedented security.

The main function was held at Bakshi stadium here where Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffer Hussain Baigh unfurled the national flag and took salute at the march-past presented by contingents of Jammu and Kashmir police, Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police, Central Reserve Police Force, Fire and Emergency Services, NCC and school children despite light snowing.

The cultural programmes were cancelled due to snowfall.

Sharp shooters, weilding automatic weapons, were deployed in and around the stadium.

All roads leading to the stadium were closed for traffic.

Police and paramilitary troops were deployed on both sides of the roads after every five feet to thwart any militant attack.

Officials were being frisked and their invitation and identity cards checked before allowing them to proceed towards the stadium.

Road blocks were errected to prevent any vehicle, execpt those having car pass, to enter the stadium area.

Sharp shooters were also positioned at high rise buildings and were keeping a watch on streets with the help of binoculars.

Foot patrolling in the areas from where the militants could fire rocket or grenade was intensified for the past two days to foil any such attempt.

Reports of RD celeberations were received from other parts of the Valley, including the district headquaters.
