PMK urges special category status to Pondy

Puducherry, Jan 26 (UNI) The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) today urged the Centre to provide special category state status to Puducherry.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at a three-day state executive committee meeting of the party which concluded here today.

The resoution urged the Centre to declare Karaikal region as backward and provide a special financial package for it.

The meeting also demanded the Centre to implement Tamil as an official language, special component plan for dalits, setting up of a Government Medical College, doubling of engineering seats in the Government Engineering College and steps to protect traders from the crisis due to the implementation of VAT.
