HNLC bandh criples life in Shillong

Shillong, Jan 26 (UNI) Life was thrown out of gear and transport came to a standstill in the Meghalaya capital following a 24-hour bandh called by the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNCL).

The bandh was called by the tribal Khasi militant outfit to protest against the ''Indian'' Republic Day celebrations on ''Hynniewtrep land''.

Security and police forces were deployed at all strategic points.

Frisking of passers-by was carried out at different places to detect movement of armed ultras.

Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the road. Streets wore a deserted look, as people prefered to remain indoors.

However, reports from other districts in Khasi and Jaintia Hills were normal with people celebrating the 59th Republic day.

In the three districts of Garo Hills, the celebration passed off peacefully amidst tight security, even as no militant groups called for a boycott.

Meanwhile, there have been no reports of any untoward incidents from any part of the state.
