Heath Ledger's lonely last days
London, Jan 26 : Heath Ledger cut a lonely figure towards the end of his life.
The actor, who had always shied away from the spotlight, took to wandering the streets of Manhattan alone in between acting gigs and visits to his beloved 2-year old daughter Matilda.
Usually dressed in ragged jeans, an old jacket and an unshaven chin, those who came into contact with him, didn't know he was a famous actor and an Oscar nominee.
"I didn't know he was an actor. He was always the first customer. He was always here alone," the Daily Telegraph quoted Camile Angelo, the host at the Grotta Azzurra Ristorante, where Ledger often ate breakfast, as saying.
And more often than not, his only company was his cell phone and his iPod reveals Angelo.
"I told him to stop text messaging because his steak and eggs were getting cold. He smiled," she said.
Manager Max Barrsi of the Miro Cafe told the New York Daily News: "We were surprised, we never knew he was an actor. He was practically here all the time for coffee . . . always very nice with us."
The actor was found dead at his New York apartment on January 22. He was 28.
