Handloom sales outlets opened

Madurai,Jan 26 (UNI) In a novel way to promote handlooms and protect the welfare of handloom weavers, exclusive Handloom Sales Outlets were opened in more than one hundred Colleges affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), today.

The unique initiative was taken up by MKU in association with the State-owned COOPTEX for the effective implementation of "Kaitharikku Kaikoduppom" "(Helping Hand to Handlooms)" introduced by the Tamil Nadu government.

Vice Chancellor of MKU P Maruthamuthu said the students involved in National Service Scheme (NSS) activities would sell handloom products like sarees, dhothis, shirts, pants, bed-spreads, bed sheets and towels to encourage students as well as general public to purchase handlooms.

The COOPTEX products will be sold in MKU-affiliated colleges in Madurai, Dindigul, Theni and Virudhunagar districts, and a target of Rs one crore was fixed for the current year.
