Chandigarh celebrates R-Day
Chandigarh, Jan 26 (UNI) The 59th Republic Day was celebrated with traditional gaiety and fervour marking ceremonial parades, unfurling of the tri-colour and colourful cultural programmes at the Parade Ground here today.
Adviser to the UT Administrator Pradip Mehra unfurled the National Flag and took salute from the different contingents participating in the function.
Large number of school children from various city schools presented colourful cultural programme on the occasion.
On the occasion, five police personnel were also awarded by the Adviser for their distinguished and meritorious services.
Mr KIP Singh, DSP was awarded for his distinguished services while Inspector Anokh Singh, ASI (ORP) Parminder Singh, Head Constable Paramjit Singh and Constable Ved Prakash for their meritorious services.
The Chandigarh Police received the overall best contingent award. While the best contingent police award was given to UT Ladies Police followed by UT Traffic Police and Punjab Armed Police.
In NCC contingents, Naval Wing begged the first position, Army begged the second while Air Wing came third.
In the same category UT Home Guard received the first, UT Civil Defence second and UT Fire Services got the third position.
A new award this year of The Best Contingent Commander was given to Sub Inspector Balbir Singh of UT Home Guard.
Chandigarh Mayor Pardeep Chhabra, Home Secretary Krishna Mohan, Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar were the prominent among others who were present on the occasion.
