16 killed, 42 injured in three road accidents in K'taka

Bangalore, Jan 26 (UNI) Sixteen people were killed and 42 injured in three separate road accidents at different places in Karnataka, early today.

According to police, eight labourers were charred to death and two suffered burns when a van in which they were travelling rammed into a roadside lamp post at Jappinagaru near Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada District.

While eight people were burnt alive, two sustained burns when the vehicle caught fire after hitting the electric post, police said.

In another incident, five people were killed and 25 injured in a collision between a private bus and a truck near Byaladagere Gate on the National Highway 48 in Kunigal taluk of Tumkur district.

The injured were shifted to Tumkur and Bangalore General hospitals.

In the third accident, three people died and 15 injured when a private bus proceeding to Dharmasthala from here, hit a roadside tree near Mudigere in Chickmagalur district.

The condition of some of the injured admitted to various hospitals in Chickmagalur district was stated to be serious, police added.
