HNLC calls 24-hour bandh on RD in Meghalaya
Shillong, Jan 24 (UNI) The banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has called a 24-hour bandh to boycott the Republic Day celebrations in Meghalaya.
According to a statement issued through e-mail to a section of the press here today, the outfit's publicity secretary, Sainkupar Nongtraw, said the '' bandh has been called to protest against the 'Indian' Republic Day celebrations on Hynniewtrep land ''. The bandh would be in force from 1800 hours of January 25 till 1800 hours next day.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government has sounded general alert to prevent any attempts by militants to run operations ahead of the Republic Day celebrations.
''We have alerted our security personnel stationed across the state to have peaceful republic Day celebrations,'' IG SB Singh said.
Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee had reviewed the overall law and order situation in the state with DGP BK Dey Sawian and other senior government officials.
Police commandoes have also been checking all vehicles passing through the city and Meghalaya-Assam border.
