2.5 mn Shi'ites attend the climax of Ashura rites

Karbala, Jan 19, 2008 : About 2.5 million Shi'ites marched and beat themselves on January 19 in processions through the holy city of Kerbala in Iraq to mourn the death of revered martyr Imam Hussein.

Pilgrims in white robes marched between the gold-domed Imam Hussein Shrine and another shrine dedicated to his brother, Abbas. Mourners beat themselves to imitate the suffering of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.
