Controversial Guj DGP P C Pande reinstated

Ahmedabad, Jan 23 (UNI) Controversial Gujarat Director General of Police P C Pande, who was removed from the post during the run up to the December Assembly polls, has been reinstated.

Mr Pande was removed because the Election Commission was not sure of his ''impartiality'' as he was in-charge of the city when the post-Godhra violence was at its peak in 2002.

Some time later, Mr Pande, a 1970-batch IPS officer, was sent out of the state on deputation to the Centre, where he worked with the CBI.

However, Chief Minister Narendra Modi brought him back two years ago as the DGP. There was a lot of controversy regarding his appointment, as a section of people, including politicians and bureaucrats, alleged that he was promoted for turning a blind eye to the post-Godhra riots.

He replaces K R Kaushik, who has been shifted to the Anti Corruption Bureau as DGP.
