Mumbai, Jan 22 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Standing Committee today cleared a proposal for maintaining the work done on the Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drain project (BRIMSTOWAD) worth Rs 19 crore to the contractor who has built water drainage pump in the city for draining out rain water.

The proposal was given to the same contractor who has built the pumping stations.

The administration had mentioned, that the maintainance contract will be given to the contractor infinitely, which was opposed by a member of the committee.

Group leader of the NCP and Standing Committee member Niyaz Ahmed Vanu said, ''The project is worth Rs 1200 crore and the BMC has already spent Rs 1650 crore for the same since the BRIMSTOWAD was planned two decades ago.'' Vanu added, ''According to previous reports, the capacity of the drainage system was 50 mm per hour, and now in spite of all the expenditure, the capacity has come down to 25 mm per hour and the BRIMSTOWAD will increase it to 50 mm per hour.'' Vanu further added that the tenure of the maintenance contract should be defined and not be forever.

The debate on the expenditure was on for a long time and was finally cleared after the additional commissioner of the BMC, Manu Kumar Srivastav, explained the changes the city has undergone in the last two decades.
