Srinagar, Jan 20 : The situation in Srinagar remained tense on Sunday after scores of people, including a journalist, were injured in sectarian clashes that broke out on Saturday evening.

Several vehicles were damaged, and dozens of people injured, as members of Shia and Sunni sects clashed at a locality dominated by the former.

The police fired teargas and resorted to baton charge to control the mob.

The police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in large numbers to control the situation, while senior police officials have rushed to the spot.

"In order to avoid any clash, we were keeping a close watch on the people, besides procession," said SM Sahai, Inspector General, Jammu and Kashmir.

"The situation is under control and we expect it to remain the same ahead," he added.

Authorities have restricted the movement of people in many areas.
