Congress is a liability to country: Modi

Mumbai, Jan 20 (UNI) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today described the Congress party as liability to the country and urged the people to free the country of the same.

Speaking at a rally organised here by BJP to felicitate him for his victory in the Gujarat Assembly elections held in December, Mr Modi said ''The Congress has ruled the country for nearly 45 years and was involved only in communal politics.'' He said ''Now, it was making division of the country's treasury on communal lines too.'' To substantiate his statement, he referred to the statement of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who had said Muslims have the first right on the treasury.

He criticised the Congress for not having any policy to tackle terrorism and its failure to counter such activities.

Mr Modi, who has been ruling Gujarat for nearly six and half years and became quite controversial as well as popular among the media and people, made an appeal to 'intellectuals' of the country to assess the performance of four types of governments that had so far ruled the country or the state.

He also said while the Congress had ruled the country for nearly 45 years, the Communists had been ruling their bastion, West Bengal, for nearly 30 years.

He said there were governments of regional parties which had ruled various states for quite some time and there were governments of BJP also, which had got the opportunity to rule the states and the country for several years.

The Gujarat Chief Minister said if an assessment of all these governments be done for good governance, it would definitely show that BJP did a lot for it.
