Civil registration of marriage to be must in Kerala: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 20 (UNI) With the religious heads agreeing to the 'civil registration of marriage', the Kerala Government has decided to implement the Supreme Court order in this regard, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said here today Talking to newspersons after a meeting with 43 religious organisations in this regard, he said religious heads had expressed their 'willingness' for civil registration of marriage in local bodies once it is solemnised in mosques and Mahal committees.

However, the registration would be introduced considering the interests of the communities, he said and added that a new rule would be framed only after hearing the views of religious heads.

However, for official (government) purposes, registration in the local bodies would be considered prime.

Mr Achuthanandan said the object of implementing the apex court Court order in 2006 was to protect the interests of women.
