Devout evokes spirit of sacrifice for Moharram

Lucknow, Jan 18, 2008: A young devout is evoking the spirit of sacrifice during the Muslim holy month of "Moharram" by offering prayers on embers in India's northern Lucknow city.

Moharram marks the death anniversary of Imam Hussein, grandson of Prophet Mohammad, who was killed in a battle with political rival, Yazid, in 680 A.D. in the Iraqi city of Kerbala. Other devotees watch in awe as Asif Ali kneels on a rug placed atop a pit of burning coal and offers traditional 'namaz."
