Cong hails package for farmers, incentive for girl child

New Delhi, Jan 18 (UNI) The Congress today hailed the UPA Government's decision to waive agricultural overdues of Rs 530 crore and implement a scheme to bring down infant girl mortality rate.

''These are but two examples out of an array of examples whereby we have through legislation and schemes brought about a social and economic revolution,'' Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

Listing other measures such as Bharat Nirman, National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, protection of parents and the aged and allocation of micro credit, he said all these had some significant features.

They had never been introduced before, they targeted the poorest of the poor economically and socially, they sought to change a mindset and they fulfilled the promise given by the Congress in its manifesto and the Common Mininimum Programme, he added.

''We promised we will perform, and we performed,'' he said. ''But it is the creation of the schemes which is novel and first by any government and we are proud of it.'' UNI YJ MSJ BD1848
