Ashok Bhatt elected as Speaker of Gujarat Assembly

Gandhinagar, Jan 18 (UNI) Senior BJP legislator and Former Health and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ashok Bhatt has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 12th Gujarat Legislative Assembly here today.

His name was proposed for the coveted post of Speaker by both the BJP and the opposition Congress after a meeting held yesterday.

Since no other name was filed for the post, Pro-term Speaker Dolatram Desai initiated the proceedings and declared him elected unanimously by a voice vote.

After his election, Mr Bhatt, the eighth time consecutive winner from Khadia Assembly constituency in Ahmedabad was led to the Speakers Chair by Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil.

Newly elected Speaker Ashok Bhatt, while thanking the members for supporting his candidature said that he wouldl try to uphold the traditions and would be impartial in conducting the proceedings of the house.
