TN to introduce more pollution free buses
Chennai, Jan 17 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Transport Minister K N Nehru today said the state would run more pollution free buses soon.
Inaugurating the 'Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight 2008,' organised by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) here, he said more than 19,000 buses were plying in the state daily carrying 1.80 lakh passengers, covering 79 lakh km.
In order to promote diesel conservation, the government introduced 6,000 new buses. The state earned Rs 70 crore last year by covering 5.3 km for every litre.
He said the transport department was also conducting counselling for its drivers and conductors on the importance of energy conservation.
Speaking on the occasion, IOC Regional Level Coordiantor and General Manager (Regional Services) M Nageswaran stressed the need on the importance of adopting effective measures to reduce energy use in all areas like transport and households where the share of petroleum energy consumption was substantial.
