Panel discussion on politics of language in Jamia Millia
New Delhi, Jan 17 (UNI) A panel discussion on language and power politics featuring prominent Indian and Pakistani academicians was today held at the Jamia Millia Islamia here.
The discussion, which followed the release of renowned Pakistani linguist and South Asian scholar Dr Tariq Rehman's book 'Language, Ideology and Power,' featured noted historian Mushirul and JMI VC Mushir-ul Hasan, distinguished linguist Namvar Singh, Gargesh Ravinder and Dr Rehman himself.
Dr Rehman, presently National Distinguished Professor of Linguistic and South Asian Studies at Islamabad's Quaid-e-Azam University, has been engaged in the study of the intimate linkages between language, politics, and ethnicity in Pakistan for the past few years. He has written nine books until now, including 'Language and Politics in Pakistan', which terms language as the heart of his country's major political problem of ethnicity.
