Accused Pawan Kumar (32), an employee of the girl's father, has been arrested, said a police official.
Victim Surabhi Kapoor was in her room on the first floor of her three-storey Rajdhani Enclave house when Pawan entered her room, stabbed with a knife and then brutally assaulted her with a hammer, he explained.
''The intention was to rob but when the girl screamed Pawan killed her in order to hide his identity,''police said.
The accused even attacked family members when they reached the room on hearing the girl's scream, he said adding that the incident took place around 0345 hrs.
Looking after the Kapoor family's cable service business for the last 12 years, Pawan reportedly had an affair with Surabhi but later the relationship went sour, according to sources.
''Someone who would deposit collections worth lakhs to the bank couldn't have gone at such an unearthly hour to the girl's room to steal. Instead he would have headed to the owner's room on third floor,'' said sources adding that the girl was undergoing training as an air hostess.
