SP worker sets self on fire to protest BSP policies in UP


New Delhi, Jan 15: Protesting the ''oppressive polices'' of the Uttar Pradesh Government against Samajwadi Party workers in the state, a party activist today made an immolation bid at Jantar Mantar here by setting himself on fire.

The 25-year-old Ranvijay Singh, with 95 per cent burn injuries, was admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, police said adding, ''His condition is serious.'' The incident took place at about 1215 hrs while the SP workers were staging a protest demonstration at Jantar Mantar at noon. In the emotionally charged atmosphere, Singh suddenly burst into the scene, poured kerosene on himself and set himself afire.

Before help could reach, Singh was in flames and doctors said he received 95 per cent burns and was in ''very serious'' condition.
