Nepal to name airport after Edmund Hillary

Kathmandu, Jan 15: Nepal today declared that the Lukla airport in the north east part of the country will be named as ''Hillary-Tenzing Airport'' in the memory of New Zealand's mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, who passed away last week.

Speaking at a programme organised in memory of Hillary, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Prithvi Subba Gurung said the decision was made in recognition of the adventurist who helped Nepal find an identification in the World. Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal scaled the Mt Everest, the highest peak of the world in 1953. Meanwhile, Awatari Lama of the Tenboche Monastery in Sagarmatha, Solukhumbu district, said Hillary has contributed to the educational, social and economic development of Sagarmatha region and described him as a dear friend of the Nepalis and specially the Sherpas.
