H5N1 confirmed in West Bengal: Central Govt

New Delhi, Jan 15 (UNI) The Central government today confirmed the outbreak of avian influenza in West Bengal.

The deadly disease has hit Rampurhat in Birbhum district and Balurghat in South Dinajpur, West Bengal Animal Husbandry Minister Anisur Rahman has confirmed.

Health Ministry officials said reports of the bird sample sent to the high security animal disease laboratory, Bhopal have confirmed the H5N1 virus and steps were being taken to contain the disease among the backyard poultry.

Culling operations would be carried on large scale to check the spread of infection.
