Udupi, Jan 14 (UNI) As the countdown for the completion of two-year term of biennial Paryaya, started by Sri Vidyasagara, ending on January 17, the annual event of Makara Sankranthi, was celebrated here today with religious fervour and gaiety.

Makara Sankranthi had a significance in the temple town as it was celebrated as the installation day of 'Saligramashila' statue of Lord Krishna by saint and Madhwa philosopher Madhwacharya over 800 years ago.

According to the history, Saint Madhwacharya brought the 'Gopichandan'covered statue of Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram given as a gift by the sailor for saving his ship from wreaking in the rough sea by the saint at Malpe sea shore. While carrying the two statues, the statue of Balaram slipped from saint's hand at Vadabhandeshwar near Malpe sea-shore, where it was installed by him. The saint brought the statue of Krishna with churning rod on one hand and rope on the other hand to Udupi where he installed it on Makara Sankranthi day.

The saint had also installed eight-mutts by giving Sanysadeeksha to eight Bala Sanyasis for the propagation of Madhwa philosophy and performance of Sri Krishna Pooja in rotation among them for two months each. Later, during the period of another saint and miracle man Saint Vadiraja Swamigal of Sode Mutt, the term of each Swamiji was converted into two years on rotation and hand-over ceremony of charges of the temple was known as Paryaya.

As part of annual 'Saptotsav', three chariots were pulled in the main car street on the sixth day tonight, the 'Utsavmurthy' of Lord Krishna seated in 'Bramharath', the statue of Lord Mukhyaprana ( Lord Hanuman) seated in another chariot and the Utsvmurthis of Lord Anantheshwar and Lord Chandramoulishwar in one more chariot. Large numbers of devotees gathered on both sides of main car street on both sides to witness the event.

Several pontiffs of Asta Mutt (eight mutts) besides several Matadhipathis of Madhwa mutts participated in the car festival.

Koti Tulasi Archan (offering of One crore Tulsi) to the presiding deity was also held yesterday at the temple under the leadership of the pontiff of Paryaya Krishnapura Mutt.
