Siliguri, Jan 14 (UNI) Demand for separate Gorkhaland resurfaced with the Jana Mukti Morcha(GJMM) today launching a ''non-cooperation movement'' for statehood discarding the Sixth Schedule status for Darjeeling Hill Area.

The GJMM had warned that the movement would continue for a week during which they would not allow any government official to attend their duties until Darjeeling Gorcka Hill Council (DGHC) Chairman Subhas Ghisingh vouching for the Sixth Schedule status complied.

GJMM party president Bimal Gurung today said they are to intensify their agitation by gheraoing the administrative building-cum- official residence of Mr Ghisingh if their demands were not met.

BJP leader and member of the Standing Committee on the Sixth Schedule Sushma Swaraj is scheduled to visit the area after which a report would be submitted to Parliament.

Meanwhile, Darjeeling Municipal elections, slated for today, to fill the post lying vacant following the death of its Chairman on January 1 could not be held because of the agitation.

Darjeeling District Magistrate Rajesh Pandey had recommended for postponing the date of elections.

Municipal Executive official R Thatal alleged the election process was intentionally obstructed by the agitators and steps would be taken to reschedule the Municipal elections.

Mr Gurung also echoed Mr Thatal's view that the agitation was intended to stall the election process.

Meanwhile, a possible violence was averted by police intervention in Kurseong's Mirik area, when the Gorkha National Liberation Front(GNLF) and the Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha almost came nearing a tussle over keeping government offices open or closed.

Three additional companies of police forces had been deployed to provide sufficient security arrangement in tha area with the state armed police sending in their Rapid Action Force to the region.

IG North Bengal R J Nalowa said no untoward incident had taken place.

However, government offices remained closed and tension prevailed in the region.

Altogether 250 agitators had been arrested in this connection.
