Police lathicharge TDP workers, 10 injured
Hyderabad, Jan 13 (UNI) Ten TDP workers were injured in a lathi charge, resorted to by the police during a party agitation, after a constable was hurt in stone pelting by the party workers at Gunagal village in Ranga Reddy district, today.
Police said a scuffle broke out between the TDP and Congress cadres when the latter took exception to the TDP workers offering 'rice balls' (Pinda Pradhanam-post death ritual) to a foundation stone laid by Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in 2005, for a project to supply drinking water to fluoride-affected villages.
The 'rice offering' was organised to highlight the Government's ''failure'' to take up the project even after three years.
When the police attempted to disperse the TDP workers, they pelted stones at the police, resulting in a constable sustaining injuries.
As the situation worsened, police resorted to lathi charge to chase away the TDP workers. Over 50 TDP activists were arrested, police added.
