Jaya condemns attack on fishermen
Chennai, Jan 13 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly J Jayalalithaa today condemned the firing on Indian fishermen allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy in the high seas.
In a statement here, she said the fishermen had taken due permission from the Fisheries Department and had ventured into the sea yesterday.
While fishing in the high seas near Dhanushkodi, about 25 Lankan Navy personnel surrounded them and fired at them, in which one fisherman Sekar sustained bullet wounds on his right shoulder.
She said such recurrent attacks by the Lankan Navy, which affects the livelihood of fishermen, 'should not be allowed at any cost.' Condemning the attack, the AIADMK supremo urged the Central and State Governments to protect the interests of fishermen and put an end to such attacks.
