US Hails new date for CA elections in Nepal

Kathmandu, Jan 12 (UNI) The US has welcomed the new date for Constituent Assembly (CA) elections in Nepal.

Congratulating the government, the parties and the people of Nepal on establishing April 10 as a firm date for the elections, the US Embassy in Kathmandu said it is prepared to offer assistance to allow all Nepalis to participate in the democratic process.

The US Embassy also urged all parties to develop and adhere to a Code of Conduct that will assure peaceful participation in the CA election by all Nepalis.

Terming the CA polls a critical component of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the US has encouraged the interim government to implement all components of the CPA as election preparations proceed.

Nepal government has declared a new date for the third time to hold the election for Constituent Assembly to write a new onstitution that will institutionalise republican in the Himalayan nation.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokharel has said the Election Commission welcomes the government decision to set a new date for elections.

He also welcomed the decision saying the Election Commission has got at least 90 days for carrying out preparatory work.

He said the Commission was firmly committed to holding the election within the slated timeframe.
