Tripura Election dept assures fair polls

Agartala, Jan 12 (UNI) The Tripura Election department has assured the Election Commission of India (ECI) on holding fair polls in the state with error-free electoral rolls.

Official sources said here today that the Election Commission had deleted about 1.54 lakh names of voters, whose identity was not ascertained, from the electoral list and announced that 2,30,916 voters were found eligible so far after intensive revision through door-to-door enumeration.

''We have used e-clean software for detecting fake and double entry voters, which will help us to prepare error-free rolls in the state,'' Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr G S G Ayyanger said.

Altogether 2,308,80 voters had already been given Electronic Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) and rest would also be provided with EPICs before the elections.

He stated that Tripura had set a record in cent per cent EPIC coverage for the elections and this would be the first state to strictly follow the photo identification for casting votes.

Dr Ayyanger, however, said the Centre would send 180 companies of paramilitary forces soon after announcement of the poll schedule but the ECI had decided to reduce the number of hyper-sensitive booths, as the law and order situation in the state had improved substantially.
