Lucknow, Jan 12: Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary (Home) J N Chamber on Friday said Chief Minister Mayawati needs Special Protection Group (SPG) security cover due to the threat to her life, but the Congress led-UPA government at the Centre has so far not given any official reply to its reminders.

''After reviewing the BSP supremo's security, it has been found that she needs SPG cover,'' he said here this evening. So far, the Centre had not replied. If the need arose, the state government would again send a reminder to the Union government, he underlined. Yesterday, Mr Chamber said that the UP government had stated all specific reasons to the Centre for the SPG cover along with the Intelligence input regarding constant threat to the Chief Minister's life.

Asked, if the UP police was incapable to provide security to Ms Mayawati, the official had said that SPG was a specialised security force set up by the Act of the Constitution. ''SPG has special powers and can provide fool-proof security in the entire country,'' he added. ''As the CM frequently visits other parts of the country, it is necessary that she gets the SPG security,'' he had underlined.

Last week, the UP government had requested the Centre to provide SPG security to Mayawati.
