Accord more powers to Lokayukta: Transport operators
Bangalore, Jan 11 (UNI) Fed up over 'rampant corruption' in police and transport departments, the Federation of Southern States Goods Vehicle Owners Associations today urged Karnataka Governor to accord more powers to Lokayukta to deal firmly with corrupt officials.
The Federation, in a memorandum submitted to the Governor said rampant corruption in the police and transport departments was causing hardship to the goods transport sector.
''We request you to give additional powers to Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde to deal sternly with corrupt officials. The Lokayukta should be given enough powers to suspend them and take action as per the law,'' the memorandum said.
The Federation also sent a separate memorandum to the Union Finance Secretary to provide complete details of the taxes and other cess paid by the goods transport sector and the facilities provided by the government to them.
''We request the Union Finance Secretary to furnish us all details under Right to Information Act. Despite paying 32 types of tax and cess our sector is denied proper basic infrastructure,'' Federation General Secretary N Ramachandran, said in the memorandum.
