SC issues notices to VSNL to fill up quota for SC/ST
New Delhi, Jan 10 (UNI) The Supreme Court today issued notices to the Cabinet Secretary, National SC/ST Comission and the Department of Telecommunication on a petition seeking direction to Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) to fill up the quota of SC/ST as per the provisions of the Constitution.
A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices R V Raveendran and J M Panchal issued notices on the petition filed by VSNL SC/ST Welfare Samiti seeking direction to the VSNL to provide employment to the SC/ST candidates under the reservation category as per law.
According to the petitioner, the VSNL being privatised has stopped recruiting SC/ST candidates on the ground that the reservation policy is not applicable to private institutions.
The VSNL is presently a Tata concern.
As per the Constitution, people belonging to SC/ST have 22.5 per cent quota for jobs.
